Résumé :

Development since 2000 of the Eurasian Pygmy Owl population in the northern Vosges (Northeastern France)? Status in France and neighbouring countries. Since the first record of this species in 2000 in the northern Vosges at the elevation of 240m a.s.l. and nesting evidence in 2002, a survey was carried out on a 4,500 ha large study site. Between 2000 and 2018, 2,262 visits allowed more than 1,000 records of  his species and the finding of 25 more or less regularly occupied suitable sites. Fig. 1 shows the variation in abundance: a maximum of 14 territories were used in autumn and 10 in spring. The species was totally absent in some years. 20 nesting have been studied on the study site or its neighbourhood. Nests are mainly located in oak holes digged out by woodpeckers at altitudes between 250 and 300 m a.s.l. The records are compared with similar records elsewhere in France. Thanks to many investigations in the last years, the species was discovered in numerous new sites in France. Fig. 2 shows the species dynamism: more than 300 territories were found in 2012, 2016 and 2017. The Pygmy Owl seems to be in expansion as it is also the case in neighbouring countries (Germany, Belgium and Switzerland). The species is sedentary but recent data show rather important movements allowing it to colonize new mountainous areas.
